Wychwood
Location & Borough
Wychwood is a mid-city neighbourhood in the City of Toronto borough, centred on Christie Street and St. Clair Avenue West's western reaches, between Bathurst Street and Oakwood Avenue. It takes its name from Wychwood Park — a unique private residential enclave within the neighbourhood — and is known for the Artscape Wychwood Barns, a converted streetcar maintenance facility turned arts and community hub.
Character & Vibe
Wychwood has a distinct arts-and-community identity anchored by the Barns. The neighbourhood is walkable, neighbourhood-scaled, and has a progressive, arts-forward community association that hosts farmers' markets, neighbourhood events, and public art programming. The housing stock is primarily semi-detached and detached Victorian and Edwardian homes on established streets. The vibe is engaged, community-oriented, and authentically local — not attempting to be anything it isn't.
Transit
No subway stations within the boundary, but 39 bus stops connect to the 512 St. Clair streetcar and the 7 Bathurst bus, both of which connect to subway lines. Transit is workable but requires surface connections. The neighbourhood's walkability within itself compensates for the lack of a direct subway.
Landmarks & Amenities
Artscape Wychwood Barns hosts a Saturday farmers' market year-round, gallery space, community workshops, and artist studios. Seventy-three dining options and 8 grocers along the St. Clair West strip — one of the city's best neighbourhood restaurant corridors. Seven fitness studios and 8 healthcare facilities. One library.
Parks & Green Space
Ten parks including Wychwood Park itself (a historic private park with a pond — accessible to neighbours), Christie Pits Park to the east, and various neighbourhood greens. The neighbourhood's street tree canopy is dense and mature.
Dining & Nightlife
Seventy-three restaurants make the St. Clair West strip exceptional for neighbourhood dining — independent Italian, Ethiopian, Portuguese, Middle Eastern, and contemporary Canadian all coexist on a stretch of a few blocks. Four nightlife venues provide a civilized evening scene without overwhelming the residential character.
Schools
Two schools within the boundary, with additional options in adjacent Christie Pits and Corso Italia neighbourhoods.
Rental Market
With 39 listings, average rent is $2,791 and median is $2,500. Range is $1,000–$5,400. Low turnover is consistent with the neighbourhood's strong community attachment. When units do come available, they move quickly.
Who It's Best For
Artists, designers, and creatives who want to live near the Artscape Barns. Families who want the Saturday farmers' market on their doorstep. Community-oriented renters who want to actually know their neighbours. Those who love the St. Clair West restaurant strip.
