Moss Park
Location & Character
Moss Park occupies a complex position in the City of Toronto — it sits immediately east of downtown's financial core, bounded roughly by Jarvis Street to the west, Parliament Street to the east, Queen Street to the north, and Front Street to the south. It's one of Toronto's most challenged communities, home to social housing towers, a shelter corridor along Sherbourne, and a growing wave of condo development as the city's downtown expands eastward.
The neighbourhood is in transition. Long associated with social services, street-level poverty, and the Moss Park Arena complex, it now also hosts new mid-rise residential development, proximity to the St. Lawrence Market district, and some of Toronto's most convenient downtown transit access.
Transit
Despite having no subway stations within its borders, Moss Park has exceptional bus coverage with 29 bus stops. The Queen and King streetcars run along its northern and southern edges. Connectivity to the entire downtown core is strong.
Landmarks & Amenities
The St. Lawrence Market — one of North America's top food markets — sits just southwest of the neighbourhood. Thirteen parks, 27 grocery stores, and 85 dining options make daily life functional. Sixteen healthcare facilities and 3 fitness studios serve the area. The Moss Park Arena hosts sports and community events.
Parks & Green Space
Thirteen parks include David Crombie Park along the Esplanade, which offers a pleasant linear green space. Allan Gardens — the historic Victorian greenhouse and park — borders the neighbourhood and provides a notable green amenity.
Dining & Nightlife
Eighty-five dining options and 9 nightlife venues reflect the area's proximity to downtown entertainment districts. King Street East's restaurant scene spills into the neighbourhood's southern edge.
Schools
Four schools and one library serve the area. Educational infrastructure is thin relative to the population density.
Rental Market
With 289 listings — among the highest volumes in central Toronto — Moss Park offers significant rental inventory. The average rent is $2,393 and the median $2,300, with a range of $1,100–$4,700. These are some of the most affordable downtown-adjacent rents available, reflecting the neighbourhood's transitional status.
Who It's Best For
Moss Park suits budget-conscious renters who want to be steps from downtown without paying Distillery or St. Lawrence Market prices. It's practical for transit riders, those working in the financial district, and renters who prioritize location over neighbourhood prestige.
